Do you feel sad, down or blue most of the time?  Are you feeling stressed?  Have you lost interest or pleasure in things you used to enjoy?  Do you feel fearful or worried for no clear reason?  These are common symptoms of depression and anxiety, problem mood states that can hijack your life and interfere with your happiness and well being.

Counseling for depression & anxiety...

Many of the people who work with me experience symptoms of depression or anxiety due to stressful situations in their lives.  Relationship issues, family problems, parenting concerns, aging parents, work difficulties, health issues, and painful childhood experiences are some of the most common presenting concerns.  As a licensed psychologist, I've been providing counseling and psychotherapy to help people deal with depression and anxiety for almost 30 years.  I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs to make sure you receive the help and support that is best for you.  You don't have to do this alone.  I focus on helping people find relief from depression and anxiety and offer practical, compassionate care that brings relief and hope.  If you want your life back, counseling and psychotherapy can help you find comfort being yourself and living the life you were meant to live.

Common symptoms of depression...

The symptoms of depression typically include some combination of the following:

  • Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness.  A bleak outlook toward the future, like nothing will ever get better like there’s nothing you can do to improve your situation.
  • Loss of interest and pleasure in activities.  No interest in your usual hobbies, pastimes, social activities, or sex.  You just don't feel joy or pleasure in anything.
  • Appetite or weight changes.  Significant weight loss or weight gain—a change of more than 5% of body weight in a month.
  • Sleep changes.  Either trouble falling asleep, waking repeatedly during the night, early morning awakening, or oversleeping (also known as hypersomnia).
  • Anger or irritability.  Feelings of agitation and restlessness.  You find yourself being impatient and short-tempered, and things gets on your nerves easily.
  • Loss of energy.  Feeling fatigued, sluggish, and physically drained.  Your body may feel heavy, like its hard to get anything done, and even small tasks can be exhausting.
  • Negative view of self.  Feelings of worthlessness or guilt.  You may criticize yourself harshly for perceived faults and mistakes and imperfections.
  • Concentration problems.  Trouble focusing, making decisions, or remembering things.
  • Unexplained aches and pains.  You may experience more physical discomfort, such as headaches, back pain, aching muscles, and stomach pain.

Common symptoms of anxiety...

There are several different types of anxiety disorders, including:

  • Generalized anxiety disorder:  Excessive, unrealistic worry and tension, even if there is little or nothing to fear.  Restlessness or feeling edgy, becoming tired easily, trouble concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, and sleep problems are common.
  • Panic disorder:  Feelings of terror, sweating, chest pain, palpitations, choking sensations, chills, and or stomach upset that appear suddenly, which may make the person feel like he or she is having a heart attack or going crazy.
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD):  People with OCD are plagued by constant thoughts or fears that cause them to perform certain rituals or routines. The disturbing thoughts are called obsessions, and the rituals are called compulsions.  For example, a person with an unreasonable fear of germs may repetitively wash his or her hands.
  • Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD):  A condition that can develop following a traumatic and/or terrifying event, such as a sexual or physical assault, the unexpected death of a loved one, or a natural disaster.  Avoidance of people, places, or situations that are reminiscent of the traumatic event, re-experiencing the trauma in repeated nightmares or flashbacks, difficulty trusting others, excessive attention to staying safe or keeping loved ones safe, a tendency to startle easily and a sense of a bleak or foreshortened future are common features of PTSD.
  • Social anxiety disorder:  Involves overwhelming worry and self-consciousness about everyday social situations. The worry often centers on a fear of being judged by others, or behaving in a way that might cause embarrassment or lead to ridicule.
