About Dr. Alan Zwerdling

Dr. Alan Zwerdling received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Maine in 1984, a program fully accredited by the American Psychological Association.  He was awarded a unique, special commendation from the psychology faculty for overall clinical and academic excellence.  In addition to his full time counseling practice, he has served as a college instructor and supervisor to psychologists, clinical social workers and marriage and family therapists.

Dr. Zwerdling was personally trained and certified in relationship counseling by Dr. John Gray, author of the popular book, "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus".  He led a series of "Mars and Venus" workshops for singles and couples focusing on dating, communication, conflict resolution and intimacy.  He ran numerous corporate seminars on team building and effective workplace communication, including training events with Lucent Technologies, AT&T, Heritage House Realtors, and the Monmouth County Library.  He has been interviewed on the radio (106.3 FM) on the topics of improving communication, understanding gender differences, and building greater connection and closeness in committed relationships.  To read his 2017 Valentines Day interview with the Asbury Park Press on love and relationships, click here.

Recently, after many years of study, Dr. Zwerdling became the first therapist in Monmouth and Ocean Counties to receive full certification in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for Couples, widely regarded as the most effective method of couples therapy and marriage counseling available today.  He currently helps teach this model to other therapists and has been invited to speak about EFT at national conferences.  He is recognized by the International Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT).

For his work with individual adults, Dr. Zwerdling completed an intensive three year post-doctoral training program in Short-Term Dynamic Therapy at the STDP Institute.  He is highly trained and experienced in both short-term, solution focused counseling and deeper experiential and insight oriented therapies.

Dr. Zwerdling has worked in the areas of 12-step addiction recovery and trauma work for survivors of physical, sexual and emotional abuse for many years.  Keenly aware of the recent increase in internet addictions, cybersex, compulsive pornography use and online affairs, Dr. Zwerdling has pursued extensive training with Dr. Patrick Carnes, the internationally recognized leader in this field.

Dr. Zwerdling's mission is to provide the most effective, highest quality personalized care to individuals and couples in the Red Bank area and surrounding communities of Monmouth County.  He offers seasoned, up to date, experienced help in a warm, caring and compassionate manner.  He maintains the highest ethical standards to provide for your confidentiality, safety and privacy.
